Cycling is an exciting, fun and dynamic sport that is suitable for kids and adults alike, making it a sport the whole family can enjoy together. Offering a wide variety of disciplines from road, track, MTB, BMX and cyclo cross, there is no shortage of organised events and cycling paths around Australia whether you want to get involved socially, recreationally or competitively.
Cycling Australia provides a variety of memberships for both competition and recreation purposes, starting with categories such as ride basic, ride plus, race and non-rider covering from under-9s up. Depending on your membership you will have access to compete at club, interclub, state, national and international level and to participate in various programs, recreational rides and other activities. Membership also provides some insurance coverage.
Road cycling is the most widespread form of cycling. It includes recreational, racing, and utility cycling. Road cycling can be done with a recumbent bike which allows people of all abilities to participate.
Road racing is also the most popular professional form of bicycle racing, in terms of numbers of competitors, events and spectators. The two most common competition formats are mass start events, where riders start simultaneously and race to set finish point; and time trials, where individual riders or teams race a course alone against the clock. Stage races or “tours” take multiple days and consist of several mass-start or time-trial stages ridden consecutively.
Track cycling is usually held on specially built banked tracks or velodromes. Track cycling events fit into two broad categories: sprint races and endurance races.
The main sprint events are: sprint, team sprint, keirin and track time trial.
The main endurance events are: individual pursuit, team pursuit, scratch race, points race, madison, omnium, handicap or hare and hounds, and miss and out.
Mountain biking is a form of racing held on off-road terrain. There are multiple options within mountain biking from recreational to competitive including;
- Cross-country (XC)-racing held on a varied terrain circuit, distances can vary from 6-8 kms, 50kms or short track around 800 meters.
- Downhill- racing is a time trial event. The bike is designed with long travel suspension and hydraulic disc brakes.
- Super D – a blend of cross-country and downhill.
- Freeride- a competition of skill and style.
- Dual Slalom/Dual is a ski-inspired event which pits two riders against each other on two identical man-made tracks side-by-side with the same jumps and berms, with a rider on each track, and the first across the line wins.
- Four cross- this event pits four riders on the same course from starting gates to finish.
- Marathon- the toughest form of mountain biking with riders often having to cover more than 80 km in one race on mountainous terrain.
- Enduro- a type of mountain bike racing where the downhills are timed, and the uphills are not.
- Stage races – consist of several races – ‘stages’ – ridden consecutively, usually over a period of several days. The competitor with the lowest cumulative time to complete all the stages is declared the overall winner.
- Bike trials- Slow negotiation of man-made and natural obstacles where setting a foot down constitutes a penalty.
- Dirt jumping- involves the rider to jump off mounds of dirt to perform the best tricks with the best style.
- Mountain bike orienteering – is an orienteering sport on a mountain bike where navigation is done along trails and tracks.
- 24-hour mountain bike races – are a form of endurance mountain bike racing where solo competitors or teams race for a period of 24 hours and standings are based on who has ridden the furthest distance in that time.
BMX racing is a type of off-road bicycle racing. The format of BMX was derived from motocross racing. BMX bicycle races are sprint races on purpose-built off-road single-lap race tracks. The track usually consists of a starting gate for up to eight racers, a groomed, serpentine, dirt race course made of various jumps and rollers and a finish line.
Cyclo-cross is a form of bicycle racing. Races typically take place in the autumn and winter and consist of many laps of a short (2.5–3.5 km or 1.5–2 mile) course featuring pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and obstacles requiring the rider to quickly dismount, carry the bike while navigating the obstruction and remount.
